Meaning
Special occasions on The Riviera
Birthdays come and go, but certain milestones warrant more significant celebrations. Career accomplishments can fly under the radar but achieving meaningful goals merits reward. Similarly, a wedding anniversary may be acknowledged privately, but being in love is worth celebrating daily. Life’s special occasions; honeymoons, retirement, friends’ reunions and spontaneous vacations, all draw global visitors to The Riviera, a region synonymous with elegance and celebration. All year round and especially in summer months this azure coastline of picturesque towns and surrounding nature fills up with festive anticipation.
Today, the 79th Cannes Film Festival begins, and red carpets are rolled out for many of the worlds’ most renowned filmmakers, movie stars, celebrities and affluent guests. Welcoming them on La Croisette, the seaside city opens another glamorous season of events as the world watches. Shortly after this prestigious occasion, helicopters and superyachts bring visitors to the Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco for race parties, charity auctions and gala nights. With the yachting season soon in full swing, luxury shopping, resorts and beach clubs open, the Mediterranean is set up to entertain. Many seek to travel here, either to attend events, or to celebrate their own special occasions, away from the busyness. Yet planning a trip of this calibre, especially from afar, is not without complexity.
Now imagine accessing truly exquisite places, without queuing or navigating crowds. Envision private touring of palaces, attending artisan masterclasses in historic venues or enjoying spa treatments in total peace. Picture exclusive entry to vineyards, where you meet chefs who then prepare a dinner party only for you, taken in with a spectacular view. Travelling with ease, secluded from the usual tourist spots, getting to know the Provençal lifestyle in a way not typically accessible to visitors.
Bespoke travel agency, Olea Voyages, have a unique proposition for discerning travellers looking to explore France or Monaco in an unparalleled way. "Let us guide you into a world where travel becomes an art, and each journey, an unforgettable masterpiece.” I spoke to Nicola Waite Erard who co-founded the agency with her husband Alain Erard. Avid travellers, France is home for over two decades and they now live on The Riviera. Nicola’s career in luxury brought her to Monaco, where interactions with high-profile international clients attuned her to what distinguishes rare experiences. With a trusted network of partners from all over the country, the couple has set about crafting the ultimate in travel, centred on hyper-personalised experiences tailored to each client.
There is no list of pre-packaged trips, no catalogue and nothing ready-made. Every journey begins with a conversation, where Nicola gets to know the person on a deeper level. In a detailed exchange, she explores who they are, their likes and dislikes. They discuss where they have been and where they wish to go. They even talk about past trips that perhaps didn’t match expectations. From this, a personalised itinerary begins to take shape, refined until it reflects the person, couple or group of people it is designed for.
Wellness is not seen as a separate activity or add-on, but as a lifestyle that gets woven into the journey. Time is optimised for wellbeing; activities are balanced with relaxation. Morning movement overlooking the sea. Afternoons spent walking or cycling through hillside paths, scented with herbs and wildflowers. Meeting local producers at food tastings that evoke childhood memories.
For many, this touches the deeper motivation behind travel.
Time carved out for reconnection with themselves and with each other.
A hope to share meaningful moments, to honour people and a desire to mark time in a way that feels considered.
Exploring full-body immersion by journeying through all our five senses, is also something on offer in bespoke wellness travel. Olea Voyages recently curated a wellness retreat in Grasse where they invited guests to practise private Pilates or outdoor yoga at dawn, then joining meditations and mindful walks through forests and gardens. Guests learned about flora and fauna from local experts, connecting them to the landscape through the making and drinking of herbal teas, then discovering them in edible form at lunch. Each guest also composed a fragrance that could later be reordered, a scent bringing them back to that particular travel moment in their life. “Today’s luxury traveller is looking for experiences that resonate and activities that are deeply aligned with them,” says Nicola.
Beneath the desire to celebrate, is that same intention to pause. Stillness as part of sensory travel, is perhaps what also allows for celebrations to be felt more deeply.
Bespoke journeys are not just about seamless organisation; they are about realising dreams, feeling joy and enjoying life. Nicola reflects on the many possibilities of the area and how celebration keeps coming up in conversations. “Some of our guests have a clear vision, a birthday to celebrate, an anniversary to honour or a gathering of friends already imagined in detail. Others prefer to hand over the reins, a carte blanche of sorts, asking simply to be taken care of. In both cases, we listen closely and do our best in curating extraordinary journeys every time.” Sometimes this means the agenda is organised around an event, sometimes it is about creating a romantic escape, time set aside to simply enjoy being together. For some, the programme entails cultural visits, action from morning to evening. For others, time is more deliberately flexible.
While The Riviera provides a stunning backdrop, there are also practical challenges in the region, tight road traffic and crowded places. Discretion and security are important, and Olea Voyages work exclusively with trusted partners, so that guests can move freely, wearing their finest diamonds and handbags, with complete peace of mind. From our conversation, it was clear how every element of the journey is thoughtfully planned.
Looking back, this careful attention to detail and personal tastes, is what makes the greatest impact on visitors. There is lasting allure in this form of travel and Nicola has found great reward in hearing feedback from their guests: “The trip felt exactly right. We would never have been able to find or access this place ourselves.”.
Some occasions deserve to be marked in a manner that renders the memory more personally meaningful. When the setting itself is providing beauty, heritage and rich culture, bespoke travel can home in on the intention of what’s being honoured.
A celebration of life and love where almost anything is possible.
